Foreign tourists come to Greece, but they don’t spend a lot of money here

Greece attracts tourists but they appear to be... on the low budget side, according to official data. The average spending per trip of foreign tourists in Greece in 2013 was 604.2 euro

Newsroom May 10 02:34

Those who spend the most during their trips to Greece are the Canadians (1,388 euros), the Australians (1,369 euros), the Americans (1,218 euros), the Russians (989 euros), the Swiss (961 euros) and the Austrians (898 euros).

It should be noted however that the latest data from the Bank of Greece concerning tourists’ spending in the first two months of this year show that foreign tourists who visited Greece in 2014 spent more compared to the same period in 2013.

Specifically, the average expenditure per trip (not including cruise passenger data) increased 6.3% to reach 397 euros.

Among the destinations that are Greece’s direct rivals, the country with the highest average expenditure of foreign tourists per trip is Spain.

In 2013 the average expenditure in Spain amounted to 976 euros per tourist, marking an annual increase of 3.7%. The average spending rose even further in January – March of this year, reaching 1,000 euros. Moreover, the visitors of Cyprus seem to be more “generous” that the ones of Greece, spending an average of 860 euros each in 2013.

Only Turkey has a lower average expenditure per trip of foreign tourists compared to the one of Greece, which was around 535 euros in 2013. However, in the first quarter of 2014, that figure rose to 628 euros.
According to “Kathimerini” newspaper, that is citing Trivago data, the average expenditure is expected to rise this year, due to the rebound of the hotel prices.
