Religious tourism on Hersonissos, Crete

The brochure contains information on about 40 churches and monasteries

Newsroom July 4 09:53

Religious tourism is not a new idea, although nowadays it is developed more actively. It has its roots in the pilgrimages of the past years.

Greece with its numerous churches and monasteries is a perfect destination for those who are interested in religious tourism or just find the opportunity to visit religious site during holiday.

In this framework, the Municipality of Hersonissos published a new brochure named “Religious Experiences” containing the churches and monasteries of the area to assist tourists who are interested in religious tourism and encourage others to visit lesser-known areas of Hersonissos.

The brochure contains information on about 40 churches and monasteries located in the Municipality of Hersonissos and is written in Greek, English and Russian.

“This publication is an important contribution both to historical memories and to the area’s orthodox elements, connecting the present with the past,” the municipality said in an announcement.

The aim of the municipality is to promote the religious monuments of Hersonissos, but also to highlight these sites as cultural monuments of archaeological interest.

The brochure will be provided for free to all hotels of the area in order to inform their guests about the churches and monasteries of Hersonissos (http://issuu.com/myhersonissos/docs/religiontourismcretehersonissos_en).

“The publication of the thematic brochure for religious tourism will offer multiple benefits to the local economy as it will encourage visitors to also explore the lesser-known areas of our municipality and give a boost to tourism throughout the year,” Hersonissos Mayor Zaharias Doxiadis said.
