The Full Moon made international headlines as a super moon rose above cities on Sunday night. For the second of three times this year, the full moon orbitted nearer to the earth and appeared unusually large and bright. The phenomenon, known as “perigee moon”, occurs when the moon is near the horizon, appearing larger and brighter than usual. Social network sites were abuzz with photos of the moon. The next super moon expected on September 9.

In Greece, it coincided with August full moon events that are hosted for free at archaeological sites across the country. The supermoon rose in the sky over Apollo’s temple at ancient Corinth, 80 km southwest of Athens was featured on news sites around the world.

The full moon descending behind the Nossa Senhora da Penha Church in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was also impressive.

In Poland, the supermoon symmetrically lined itself with the clock on top of the Palace of Culture in Warsaw.

It rose behind the historic Mount Wilson Observatory in the Angeles National Forest, northeast of Los Angeles, California.

It silhouetted the castle of Somoskoujfalu, 123 kilometers northeast of Budapest, Hungary.

People played games with silhouettes as figurines on a Chinese pavilion in Beijing looked as though they were walking on the moon.

Fans were oblivious to it as it rose behind them during a baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium, L.A., California.

Perhaps the most photographed full moon of the year, people took photos at the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia as they watched a red full moon rise above a bridge over the Vardar River in Skopje.

Twitter accounts were ablaze with photographs of the full moon. Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev posted spectacular pictures on his Twitter account from the International Space Station.
