According to mythology, the island was created during the war between Gods and Titans . Poseidon chased the terrible Giant Polyvotis down to Kos, cut a part of the island and threw it to him. The giant sunk in the bottom of the Aegean Sea. This rock is the modern Nisyros. The volcano was created in the pace where the mouth of Polyvotis was and it is said that the volcano’s explosions are his angry breath.

Nisyros is one of the most beautiful Aegean islands which is still untouched by mass tourism.
