Edessa is known as the “city of waters” and the name itself is believed to mean “tower in the water.” The historic city in Central Macedonia is the second largest city in Pella. The area holds a place in Greek history as this was where Caranus established the first capital of ancient Macedon. In antiquity it was considered a strategic location that controlled Egnatia Road as it entered the Pindus mountains and it became a center for medieval Greek culture.
