Trip Advisor users pick Top 10 sights to see in Greece

One or two are surprises; there are many, many more 'off-the-beaten track'

Newsroom June 14 02:28

Trip Advisor recently asked its members to vote on the top 10 sights in Greece for tourists and travelers. How many have you visited?

Here they are in descending order:

10. Praxiteles’ statue of Hermes, located in the National Archaeological Museum in central Athens. It considered one of the finest examples of Classical sculpture.

9. The ancient theatre of Epidavros (Epidaurus), located in the northeast Peloponnese in southern Greece. The site continues to be used today to stage theatrical works, making for a stunning experience.

trip2

8. Here’s one that wasn’t “on the map” a few years ago: Spinalonga. This rock islet can be easily reached via boat tours from the Cretan resort down of Elounda. It served as a lepers’ colony until 1959 and acquired international exposure as the setting of Victoria’s Hislop’s best-seller “The Island”.

trip3

7. Ancient Lindos is found on the large Dodecanese island of Rhodes, itself one of the pre-eminent holiday destinations in the Mediterranean.

trip4

6. The Panaghia (Madonna) Hozoviotissa Monastery on the eastern Aegean island of Amorgos, the isle that served as the setting for the iconic movie “The Deep Blue”. This monastery is literally built on a steep cliff.

trip5

5. The well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus (Vulcan) in the Thisseio district of central Athens, next to the Acropolis achaeological site.

trip6

4. The Delphi archaeological site in south-central Greece. During antiquity this site was considered the “Navel of the World”. The famed oracles of the Temple dedicated to the Olympian god Apollo revealed their prophesies here to the era’s ‘rich, powerful and famous’.

trip7

3. Meteora in central Greece refers to a site of stunning rock formations, many of whom rise hundreds of metres into the air, where medieval monasteries were built.

trip8

2. The Parthenon Temple atop the Acropolis Hill in central Athens, the structure, dedicated to the goddess Athena that’s the quintessence of Classical antiquity.
