US State Department to Turkey: There is no issue of questioning the sovereignty of the Greek islands

"The sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected and protected"

Newsroom February 11 08:02

“Greece’s sovereignty over the (Aegean) islands is unquestionable”, the US State Department said regarding a recent statement by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Answering a question of the Hellas Journal website regarding the position of the Turkish minister, a State Department spokesman clarified that “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected and protected. The sovereignty of Greece in these islands is not in question”.

Mevlut Cavusoglu in an interview with the Turkish network TRT once again raised the issue of demilitarization of the islands, saying that Turkey has sent a letter to the United Nations on this issue.

However, the Turkish minister went a step further, arguing that the militarization of the islands violates the international treaties that determined the islands’ status and therefore a question of sovereignty may arise.
