European Commission to Cavusoglu: Greece’s sovereignty over its islands is undisputed

"Turkey should commit itself unequivocally to good neighborly relations and work for the peaceful settlement of any disputes"

Newsroom February 13 01:30

The European Commission, in the clearest possible way, responded to the recent statements of Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, through its spokesman for foreign affairs, Peter Stano, who raised the issue of sovereignty over Greek islands under the pretext of Ankara’s request for their demilitarization.

In particular, Peter Stano states that “the comments of Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in a recent interview, which question the sovereignty of Greece in some of its islands, are counterproductive and contradict the efforts to de-escalate the conflict in the Eastern Mediterranean, as requested by the conclusions of the European Council of March 23rd and June 24-25, 2021. Greece’s sovereignty over these islands is unquestionable. Turkey should respect this, refrain from provocative statements and actions in this regard, commit itself unequivocally to good neighborly relations and work for the peaceful settlement of any disputes. International agreements must be respected”, he said.
