Extraordinary meeting in Maximou under Mitsotakis on energy efficiency

Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation with the Bulgarian Prime Minister

Newsroom April 27 11:45

An extraordinary meeting will be held today at 15:30′ at the Maximos Palace under the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with the participation of the leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, on the country’s energy efficiency and the wider implications of yesterday’s decisions by Russia to close the gas supply to Poland and Bulgaria.

This morning Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Bulgaria Kiril Petkov.

During the communication, the Prime Minister stated that Greece will assist Bulgaria in dealing with the new situation caused to the country by the Russian decisions in the energy sector.

Yesterday’s decision by Russia has caused a domino of turmoil, once again triggering the frantic race of gas prices that exceeded 100 euros to finally close the Dutch TTF at 99 euros per megawatt hour.

Putin’s “games” and the demands for payments in rubles also test the endurance of the Greek side.

The crucial date is May 20, when Greek Greek gas suppliers DEPA, Mytilineos and Prometheus Gus will be asked to pay for their gas supplies, hoping that the EU will in the meantime conclude to its next moves in relation to Putin’s presidential decree, which provides for payment in rubles and the opening of two payment bank accounts, one in foreign currency and one in rubles, at Gazprombank.

The Russian bank will convert the payments in foreign currency into rubles before transferring the payment to Gazprom PJSC.

The EU is divided over its stance and last week suggested to companies that they continue to pay in euros and seek possible exceptions to the Moscow decree.

The fear, however, remains one: whether the acceptance of the Russian payment system is opposed to Western sanctions against Moscow.
