Mitsotakis – Menendez meeting: “Alexandroupolis will become a geostrategic center”

Menendez: Turkey is the biggest threat in the Eastern Mediterranean

Newsroom August 26 09:50

The American senator and chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate, Robert Menendez, was received this afternoon at Megaros Maximos by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

During the dialogue they had in front of the cameras, Mr. Menendez emphasized, among other things, the progress that has been made in Alexandroupolis and expressed his belief that it will become a “geostrategic center for Greece, the region and our allies.”

“It is my pleasure to welcome you back to Greece. Congratulations on your award from Greek National University of Athens. It is an important moment for the university, but also for you,” said the Prime Minister, adding that there is “a lot more to do together: not only geopolitically, but economically and on education”.

Mr. Mitsotakis praised the present American ambassador George Tsounis and added: “We look forward to continuing our amazing collaboration.”

For his part, Mr. Menendez jokingly said that “I tried not to be too noticeable while I was in Greece, but that’s not easy here.”

“I went to Alexandroupolis. Awesome progress. It will become a geostrategic center for Greece, the region and our allies. Unlimited possibilities,” he added.

The American senator Robert Menendez described Turkey as the biggest threat to the Eastern Mediterranean, during his announcement as an honorary doctorate of the Greek National University of Athens.

“They continuously violate the Greek airspace with their jet fighters. No one can tolerate these practices. Especially from a NATO member”, added Mr. Menendez during his speech and underlined that Ankara’s tactics are not fitting for a democratic country.

Mr. Menendez was categorical that for the above reasons, the agreement to upgrade the F-16s, sought by Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his associates, should not be approved.

The American senator said of the honor he received: “I couldn’t think of a better place than here to express my views on the challenges posed by Russia, China and Turkey at the international level and also on the climate crisis that plagues the world. I couldn’t find a better place to discuss the inseparable relations between our two peoples and the enormous opportunities that open before us”.
