Screening of new Giorgos Chrysanthakopoulos film (English subs) at Chania Film Festival (video)

The movie focuses on domestic violence

Newsroom October 25 07:08

The new short film with English subtitles by Giorgos Chrysanthakopoulos will be shown at the Chania Film Festival and focuses on the perennial topic of domestic violence. The title of the film is “Kernel in the pit” and its screening is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, October 26, as part of this year’s Chania Film Festival.

Somewhere in the late 1930s, in a shabby semi-underground tavern, we find Hatzis, a drunkard who almost every night, imbibes his favourite beer, trying to drown his misery and forget his failure as a father and husband. When a newly arrived stranger enters the shop, Hatzis engages in small talk, and the drunkard pours his heart out to the mysterious man, including all his dark secrets and sinful deeds. He reveals to him the real reason for his drinking problem, and that he knows full well that God loves all his creatures… both the good and the bad.

“When I started writing the feature film “Veta and the Man in Black”, it was because I wanted to deal with a very important and timeless problem, as old as human history, domestic violence. In this story, Veta, a young girl, suffers from a brain disease but also from her drunken father who systematically abuses her. On the occasion of this character, the violent drunkard, I decided to make this short film to try to approach how such a person thinks and how he justifies his actions,” explains Giorgos Chrysanthakopoulos.
