European Parliament resolution demands the annulment of the Turkish-Libyan memorandum

It also demands the withdrawal of foreign forces from Libya

Newsroom November 23 06:00

The European Parliament, in a resolution adopted on Wednesday, calls on the Libyans to proceed with the annulment of the 2019 Turkey-Libya Memorandum of Agreement on the delimitation of maritime areas in the Mediterranean Sea, and not to implement any clause included in the subsequent agreement on hydrocarbons, the which was signed on October 3, 2022 and provides for illegal drilling activities in the EEZs of third countries, including those of Cyprus and Greece.

The European Parliament is also calling for the foundations to be laid to improve security in the country and MEPs want all mercenaries, foreign fighters and foreign forces to withdraw from Libyan soil. They urge all international actors involved, including Russia, the UAE and Turkey, not to intervene in Libya, not to inflame tensions and fighting through direct or subsidized military intervention, and to immediately withdraw any mercenaries who is still in the country and poses a threat to the stability of Libya and the entire region.

According to the resolution adopted by 454 votes in favor, to 130 against, with 54 abstentions, the European Parliament adopted a series of recommendations to the European Commission, EU member states in the Council and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, regarding the political situation in war-torn Libya. Stressing the need for a stable political transition and national reconciliation between warring factions, MEPs call on the EU to support Libya in its quest for unity through an appropriate constitutional reform process. They also express their support for the UN-sponsored negotiations on a road map for holding free and fair elections.
