Alexandros Grigoropoulos rally underway in Athens (video-photos)

Athens locked down

Newsroom December 6 07:33

The 14th anniversary of the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos is underway amid draconian security measures. According to police estimates, around 4,500 people are participating in the march.

A large number of demonstrators started the march from the Propylaia, and are currently on Stadiou avenue while special traffic regulations have been put into effect.

More than 5,000 police officers, helicopters, and drones are included, among other assets, in the ELAS operational plan.

Due to the march, Panepistimiou and Stadiou streets are closed at this time. From 9 in the morning, the “University” Metro station is closed.

Once again, draconian measures will be put in place in the area of Exarchia where access to the square is expected to be prohibited due to the construction site set up for the Metro.

The measures were implemented gradually from 12 noon when the first march was planned with a gathering in the Propylaia by schoolchildren and students, while at 18:00 there was the call again to the Propylaia by various collectives of the anti-authoritarian space.

Due to the gatherings, the center of Athens is blocked for drivers in the areas around Omonia, Syntagma, and Exarchia.

In its previous announcement, the Traffic police had mentioned the following: Due to the rallies-marches that have been announced for Tuesday (06-12-2022), extraordinary traffic arrangements will be made during the noon and afternoon hours on various road axes of the Center of Athens. The above traffic regulations will be implemented gradually and depending on the traffic conditions presented.

The 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos was murdered by police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas in 2008, sparking riots across the country. The culprit received a life sentence.
