Fires continue to burn in Loutraki

The front in Keratea is better

Fires in the areas of Loutraki and its surroundings continue to burn as aerial and ground forces of the Fire Fighting Department operating are battling scattered outbreaks.

While the most difficult front is located in Dervenochoria, firefighters are constantly battling with reignitions in Saronida and Loutraki, Corinth.

Although in Loutraki, Korinthia, the situation is generally better than that of Monday, according to an update from the fire department, there are constant reignitions and small outbreaks towards Agios Haralambos. “The wind is starting to increase and that’s a problem,” the mayor of Loutraki told MEGA.

According to reports on the western front, the situation is good, in the south towards the Athens-Patras highway the front has been demarcated while there is an active part in the north of the Kallithea area, where the main effort was made during the night and continues.

According to the fire department spokesman, in Loutraki, there was a major resurgence overnight in the area 1 km north of the highway to Agios Haralambos and that is where the active front is.

More than 120 firefighters are operating with four hiking sections and 43 vehicles while five airborne firefighters and one helicopter are operating from the air and another four aircraft and one helicopter have been mobilised

The first report presented on Monday evening to the coordination meeting convened for the fire showed more than 1,000 acres of forest, pine trees, and bushes have already been burnt to ashes.

In the fire in Saronida, there are small fire hotspots while during the night, at around 3 am, the front “flared up” in several places causing new concern for residents in the area.

The work of the firefighters was made even more difficult by the fact that the winds – albeit at a lower intensity – continued to blow, with meteorologists predicting that this would continue throughout today.

According to the latest information, the picture is clearly better in Kouvaras-Keratea after the first aerial drops while the problem is located a little north to Kalyvia where drops are constantly being made. According to the same information, there is no active front around the perimeter (Lagonisi, Saronida, Anavyssos, Kouvaras) but small areas, especially in Feriza and Kalyvia.

The big flare-up during the night in Kalyvia occurred in the settlement of Stipiza where a warehouse was burnt, while according to residents’ testimonies, two other houses were engulfed in flames.
