PM Mitsotakis calls for a “global alliance” to fight climate change at UN General Assembly (video)

The PM also talked about the long-standing disputes with Turkey

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for the creation of a “global alliance” during his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York. He spoke about the major challenges facing humanity and Greece in particular, during his address. The Prime Minister began by talking about climate change, of which the Mediterranean and Greece are victims. Specifically, he referred to the steps that our country has taken to shield itself against the consequences of climate change, noting that it is important to do more even at the supranational level.

Mitsotakis spoke about the fires that hit our country last summer and thanked the countries that helped by sending firefighters who heroically dealt with the phenomena. At the same time, Mitsotakis referred to the migration issue and the increased flows, noting that migrants are losing their lives trying to reach Europe. The Prime Minister stressed that Greece has taken many steps and has dealt with the phenomenon, but there is a need for cooperation between countries.

The Prime Minister then referred specifically to Turkey and the long-standing disputes with the neighbouring country, noting that it is important for the two sides to cooperate. He also referred to the illegal occupation of part of Cyprus. Referring to the talks on the Cyprus problem, he stressed that they should be based on the conclusions of the Security Council. Mitsotakis also spoke about the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. He said that Moscow sees that the countries supporting Kiev will eventually leave Ukraine. As he said, this will not happen. In closing, the Prime Minister summed up by saying that challenges are met with true leadership. I represent a medium-sized country that is doing its best to manage challenges, but the time has come for the big players to contribute to this effort.
