Destruction in Evia and Volos, as storm Elias wreaks havoc (videos)

People are trapped in houses

Newsroom September 28 12:25

Storm Elias is wreaking havoc in its path, as in the last few hours conditions in Central and North Evia have been extremely difficult with the region bearing the brunt of the phenomena for more than 6 hours, as thousands of tons of water from Mantoudi to Istria have fallen.

In the last 24 hours in Istria, 400 cubic metres of water per acre have fallen, while in the last 6 hours of incessant rain, more than 150 cubic metres of water per acre have fallen in the area.

Since midnight, the fire brigade has been called to assist in dozens of incidents since then and has been called in to help in rescues. Transport is difficult, as roads are closed due to collapses or damage to the road network, and tree trunks and cables have fallen to the ground. Water levels have risen to over 60 cm in many cases, making it impossible for rescue teams to access the water.

The road from Madoudi to Pefki is impassable after landslides have been reported. A similar situation is reported from Kirinthos to Lake. In many cases, rescue teams called for extractions are unable to reach the villages.

Traffic is forbidden in Asmini, Pefki, Artemisio, and Gouves.

The residents of Asmeni, Pefki, Artemisio, and Gouves received a message from 112 this morning about the curfew. In particular, the message reads: “By order of the mayor, traffic is prohibited in the wider areas of Asmini, Pefki, Artemisio, and Gouves, due to the development of dangerous weather phenomena. Follow the instructions of the authorities.”

Over the past few hours the conditions have been very difficult in Istiia and the wider area, as rescue operations of people are continuous. Among them, firefighters had to intervene to extricate a mother and a small child in Asminios who were surrounded by water. They are also operating with boats in Pefki, Gouves, Prokopi, and other villages in central and northern Evia, while calls are constant from coastal villages of Istria.

Even the movement of firefighting forces from the centre of Chalkida to North Evia is impossible, as the condition of roads does not allow it, while earth-moving machinery is working all night to be able to open a passage for the rescue teams to pass.

The situation in Lamia

In Lamia, throughout the night auyhorities are trying to reinforce the embankments on the river Sperchio to avoid flooding in a wider area.

Dozens of trucks are unloading material and reinforcing the dikes at critical points with the result that so far they have contained the momentum of the river.

Meanwhile, images of great destruction face the crews of the municipalities of Magnesia and the region with the first light of day, in the area of Volos, but also throughout the prefecture.

Efforts are currently underway to restore electricity and water supply to the urban complex.

Citizens throughout the night were trapped by the onslaught of bad weather Elias, and Fire Brigade and EMAK forces carried out overnight rescues. Many houses and shops were flooded, cars were swept away by the rushing torrents, and large amounts of mud washed away.

The basement of Volos hospital was also filled with water due to the heavy rainfall.
