PM Mitsotakis with Google VP: “The three public areas of application of AI in Greece & the goal of becoming a global center” (video)

"We look forward to continuing our partnership with Google"

Newsroom November 30 06:53

An event took place on the occasion of the completion of 15 years since the opening of the Greek division of Google in the presence of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Speaker of the Parliament, government officials and other officials.

In his remarks, the Prime Minister, in a discussion with the vice president of Engineering & Research at Google, Yossi Matias, and the general manager of Google Southeast Europe, Peggy Antonakou, focused on how to use Artificial Intelligence to help businesses, and emphasized that “we must become producers, not just consumers of technology”.

Speaking about the wider dimensions of Artificial Intelligence, he emphasized that Greece should be in a regulatory role. “We aim to become a global center for Artificial Intelligence ethics and code of conduct”, he added. He also focused on human rights issues.

The Greek Prime Minister pointed out the three areas in the public sphere where artificial intelligence could have immediate application with clear benefits for society as a whole. First he mentioned more sophisticated extreme weather forecasting models more accurate estimates and much faster than is possible now.

Secondly, he mentioned the Health sector, which presents great opportunities with many new tools for research that already have results.

Thirdly, the Mr. Mitsotakis referred to education, where of course he also highlighted the challenges which in this case are greater, as there is a risk that humans will be replaced in the production of texts and speech. For this reason, he emphasized the need, alongside the use of Artificial Intelligence in education, to develop tools that will be able to recognize whether a text is written by an algorithm or by a human.

“We have never hesitated to work with large companies to solve problems,” the Prime Minister stated, while also sending the message at the end of his statements that Greece is “looking forward to continuing the cooperation with Google”.
