Massive Texas wildfire engulfs more than 1 million acres setting a state record

"The potential damage is enormous"

Newsroom March 1 12:54

One of the numerous wildfires currently raging in the Texas Panhandle has expanded to become the largest in the state’s recorded history.

Known as the Smokehouse Creek fire, it ignited on Monday and despite efforts from emergency crews, containment progress remains minimal.

As of now, it has consumed over 1 million acres of land in Texas, marking it as the most extensive wildfire in the state’s history, while also scorching 31,500 acres in Oklahoma, according to CNN.

The Smokehouse Creek fire is just one of several wildfires that have swept through the Texas cattle country this week.

Tragically, the fires have claimed the lives of two individuals.

Ranchers are facing substantial losses, with thousands of livestock already perished and many more expected to be euthanized.

Additionally, numerous homes and structures have succumbed to the flames.

The renowned Turkey Track ranch in Texas has reported devastating losses, estimating that approximately 80% of its land has been ravaged by the wildfires.

“The loss of livestock, crops, and wildlife, as well as ranch fencing and other infrastructure throughout our property as well as other ranches and homes across the region is, we believe, unparalleled in our history,” stated the ranch in a release.
