The Navy receives the 3 new Romeo anti-submarine helicopters in the presence of Mitsotakis

"Greece is even stronger" wrote in a post on the receipt of the helicopters, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias

Newsroom March 20 12:08

At Kotroniou Air Base in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, the ceremony of receiving the three new Romeo MH-60R Seahawk anti-submarine helicopters from the Navy will take place in a few hours.

“Greece even stronger,” Defense Minister Nikos Dendias wrote in a post on the delivery of the helicopters.

In total, Greece will acquire seven of these helicopters, which are the fruit of the interstate program that Greece co-signed with the United States.

The MH-60R Seahawk is the most renowned naval operations vehicle in both anti-submarine and surface warfare as it features sophisticated detection, strike and countermeasure systems that offer unique capabilities in the three-dimensional battlefield of naval conflicts of our time.

As government sources point out, equally important is the interoperability of these helicopters with the other units of the Navy and the Belharra frigates, which will soon join the fleet, as well as their compatibility with the aeronautical equipment of our NATO allies, an element that strengthens Greece’s role as a pillar of regional security in the Southeastern Mediterranean.

Greece is the seventh country to receive the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R naval helicopter.

In Europe, Denmark operates with 9 MH-60Rs.

In 2023, Spain and Norway have ordered a total of 14 MH-60R helicopters.

Greece ordered MH-60R helicopters in two phases. Four were ordered in July 2020 and three more in April 2021 through an interstate Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement with the US government.

Following the delivery of the first three helicopters, the remaining four will arrive in 2025, completing the Greek Navy’s purchase.

The Navy’s MH-60Rs will join the 11 existing S-70B/B6 Seahawks, also known as Aegean Hawks, which were purchased directly from Sikorsky between 1994 and 2005, at the Naval Helicopter Base in Kotroni.
