Germany: Military chief calls for missile shield – Foresees attack from Russia in 5-8 years

"We have five to eight years, there is no alternative choice," says General Broier

The Chief of the Armed Forces of the country, Inspector General Karsten Broier, requested the rapid development of a missile shield to address potential threats from Russia, Germany.

“We have five to eight years. Within this period, we must install a missile defense system. There is no alternative choice,” General Broier said today in newspapers of the media group Funke Mediengruppe.

“We believe that Russia will be capable of waging war against NATO countries within a period of five to eight years. By then, we in Germany must also be able to repel such an attack,” he emphasized.

Russian President Vladimir Putin does not hide his intentions towards the West, said General Broier, adding, however, that “an attack on a Western country is currently the worst of scenarios. However, it could happen across the spectrum – from cyberattacks to unmanned aircraft and missiles.”

He rejected statements in Germany by officials calling for a freeze on the conflict in Ukraine. “Freezing a war requires it to be accepted by both sides. There is no frozen conflict in the world that has not reignited,” Broier said. “The current military situation in Ukraine makes the freezing of the war neither possible nor desirable.”

It is recalled that the German government has created a special fund of 100 billion euros for the upgrading of the Bundeswehr, the German armed forces. According to General Broier, 80% of the funds have now been allocated and their distribution will be completed by the end of the year, but with possible delays in procurement.

“Most of the material has been ordered, but it has not yet reached the troops to the extent that I would like,” said Broier, who believes that these 100 billion euros represent “initial funding,” emphasizing that “we must stabilize defense spending. The defense budget must remain at 2% of economic output in the long term.”
