Survey on the reasons for low visitor numbers in 200 Museums, Monuments and Archaeological Sites

A comparative analysis of ticket prices will be made with similar sites abroad

Newsroom March 27 06:09

The Organisation for the Management and Development of Cultural Resources has commissioned a study aimed at developing visitor numbers at the last 200 Archaeological Sites, Monuments and Museums in Greece.

As stated in the report, in the context of upgrading the country’s cultural heritage and increasing the participation of citizens in it, Greek Museums and Archaeological sites are called upon to seek new ways of approaching visitors.

Thus, it is proposed to investigate in depth the reasons for the low attendance in 200 museums and archaeological sites of the Ministry of Culture in the Greek territory, in order to submit proposals for increasing the attendance in these sites.

In this context, a questionnaire survey will be carried out among the managers of these sites (antiquities offices and site managers) on issues of operation and accessibility, events and activities, digital media, etc.

At the same time, the ticket policy will be investigated, which will include a comparative analysis of the ticket price with similar sites abroad.

Economic and tourism factors will also be analysed and an inventory of the current situation of archaeological sites and museums will be made.

The results of the survey will also lead to the formulation of proposals for increasing visitor numbers.

It should be noted that last year a record was achieved in terms of entrance fees to museums and archaeological sites.

According to the latest data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority for the period January-November, total receipts recorded an increase of 30% compared to the corresponding period of 2022, reaching 155 million euros from 119.25 million euros.

In the Archaeological sites, during the eleven months of January – November 2023, an increase of 22.5% in visitors, 17.7% in free admission visitors and 24.6% in the corresponding receipts was recorded compared to the corresponding period of 2022.

According to the data available so far, 2024 is also expected to be a good tourist year for Greece.

The confirmation of the positive estimates is expected to lead to higher levels of both visitor numbers and receipts of Museums and Archaeological sites.
