Kasos: Actions & honorary events for the 200 years since the Holocaust of the heroic island

During the Revolution of '21 the island, with more than 100 ships, was the terror of the Turkish-Egyptian fleet

Newsroom April 8 01:35

The mayor of the island of Kasos, Michalis Erotokritos, referred to the honorary events for the 200 years since the Holocaust of the island (June 7, 1824) at the press conference held at the ESIEA conference hall.

Members of the Honorary Committee for the 200 years since the Holocaust attended, including the poet Titos Patrikios, the writer Pantelis Boukalas, Yiannis Pavlopoulos, and academic Jenny Kremastinou. Former mayor Mary Sorotou Tsanaki was also present, along with friends of the island such as the director and actor Michalis Mitroutsis and the painter Yiannis Adamakis.

During the Revolution of ’21, Kasos, with more than 100 ships, was the terror of the Turkish-Egyptian fleet, the protector of Crete and the Dodecanese, compelling the conqueror to numerous humiliations until it burned helpless, three years later.

With the central motto “We Remember – We Honor – We Envision,” the Organizing Committee has prepared an ambitious program aiming to highlight the historical past and claim an ambitious future. Already, a seminar on “Kasian Shipping in the 19th-21st centuries” has been held, and the establishment of a shipbuilding school in Kasos has been announced. An informative leaflet has been printed, along with bookmarks available for free in major bookstores, and a collaboration with ERT has been secured as a communication sponsor.

In the immediate future, the release of a commemorative coin by the Bank of Greece and the issuance of commemorative stamps by ELTA (the Greek Post) for 1824-2024 are expected. Additionally, a conference by the Association of Arts and Letters of the Dodecanese is scheduled in Kasos, focusing on the island’s history. There will also be a seminar in the Greek Parliament on historical topics of the Holocaust period and an exhibition of artifacts from the same period.

Cultural events related to the Arts include an exhibition at the Piraeus Gallery featuring works by the internationally renowned Kasian painter Mayo (Antonis Malliarakis) and famous Greek painters inspired by Kasos.
