The Our Ocean Conference originated in 2014 as a United States-led effort aimed at raising global awareness regarding the significant challenges confronting the world’s oceans.

Its primary objective is to spur concrete actions worldwide in support of marine conservation and sustainable development initiatives.

Since its inception, the Our Ocean Conferences have facilitated more than 2,100 commitments valued at nearly $128 billion.

During the 2023 conference held in Panama, the United States alone made 77 pledges totalling nearly $6 billion in funding.

Among the distinguished attendees in Our Ocean Conference that took place in Greece, were Prince Albert of Monaco and Olga Kefalogianni, the Minister of Tourism for Greece.

Prince Albert, a fervent advocate for environmental conservation, took to the stage as one of the keynote speakers in the panel discussion titled “Mediterranean Sea: Challenges & Solutions.”

With a poignant emphasis on the significance of the Mediterranean, Prince Albert underscored how it transcends its physical boundaries to embody a rich tapestry of civilisation, history, and culture.

He articulated how the ocean lies at the heart of contemporary challenges, its diverse ecosystems bearing the brunt of environmental degradation.

Stressing the urgency of action, Prince Albert highlighted the pivotal role of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in safeguarding the Mediterranean’s ecological integrity.

During the panel discussion on sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean, Olga Kefalogianni, Greece’s Minister of Tourism, took the floor.

With a focus on preserving the delicate balance between tourism and environmental conservation, Kefalogianni articulated Greece’s commitment to fostering a sustainable tourism model.

She eloquently spoke of Greece’s island diversity and its allure as a tourist destination, emphasising the need for sustainable practices to preserve the essence of each island.

Kefalogianni emphasised the importance of nurturing local communities and safeguarding their cultural heritage amidst the tourism boom.
