Plakiotakis: Greece’s top priority is to put an end to Turkish occupation in Cyprus

The First Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament participated in a special event held in Nicosia to mark the 20th anniversary of the accession of the Republic of Cyprus to the European Union

The First Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament, Yiannis Plakiotakis, described the end of Turkish occupation in Cyprus and that finding a fair and sustainable solution is top priority while speaking at a special event held in Nicosia to mark the 20th anniversary of the accession of the Republic of Cyprus to the European Union.

Mr. Plakiotakis emphasized the complete alignment of the two Parliaments of Greece and Cyprus regarding the resolution of the Cyprus issue, noting that “Greece will not tire of reminding the international community that the Cyprus problem primarily constitutes an issue of invasion and occupation.”

The First Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament, during his visit to Cyprus, also participated in the event titled “Collective Achievements, Common Challenges, and Future Course as EU Member States – The Role of Parliaments.” Among other things, he stressed the importance of the upcoming European elections and the significance of the massive turnout of EU citizens at the polls on June 9th.

Mr. Plakiotakis went on to stress the importance of upholding fundamental values like democracy, solidarity, justice, and human rights in a world increasingly marked by instability and uncertainty. He warned that failure to do so could lead to alienation and disorientation, particularly among vulnerable populations, fostering populist and extremist movements. During his visit to Nicosia, he held private meetings with the President of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, and the President of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Annita Dimitriou.
