Shein: Toxic and carcinogenic substances discovered in children’s products and accessories sold on the platform

South Korea finds high levels of phthalates in children's shoes, leather bags, and a belt during extensive checks

Newsroom May 28 05:45

Children’s products sold by Shein in South Korea contained toxic substances far exceeding acceptable limits, Seoul authorities revealed. Among the items tested were children’s shoes, leather bags, and a belt, all found to contain high levels of phthalates, chemicals known to disrupt hormones and linked to various health issues. One pair of shoes had 428 times the legal limit of phthalates, while three bags had 153 times the limit.

Seoul authorities have been conducting weekly inspections of platforms like Shein, prompting the withdrawal of these products from sale since April. Shein claims to prioritize product safety and promptly removes items under investigation. This scrutiny follows the European Union’s decision to subject Shein to stricter safety rules due to concerns about harmful products, especially those posing risks to children.
