Thessaloniki: With burns on 60% of her body, the 2 year old girl – The ignition was caused by static electricity

They were going to a relative's wedding - It happened while her father was filling the car with gasoline with a can

Newsroom May 28 03:40

A 22-month-old girl suffered 60% burns in Thessaloniki after an ignition caused by the car being filled with petrol.

The 28-year-old father of the child, after the motorbike, refuelled his car with the petrol can. Unconcerned, the child went to run into his arms and then, because of the quality of the fabric of the child’s dress, according to thesstoday.gr, static electricity was created with the canister, causing an ignition.

The child’s clothes were engulfed in flames and the father along with the grandfather in their attempt to extinguish them with their hands, practically tearing the clothes to avoid being burned, suffered burns on their hands, with the elderly man even needing surgery.

More serious injuries were sustained by the 2-year-old girl, with a large percentage of her body surface (60%) suffering burns.

The child was rushed to Papageorgiou and from there by air ambulance to “Aglaia” where she is hospitalised, while for her good fortune no damage was caused to vital organs, with competent sources explaining that this particular case of ignition – from static electricity – is one of the rarest that can occur.

The family lives in Kavalari and and were preparing to go to the wedding of the child’s uncle.

A case has been filed against the father for child endangerment, while the Lagada Security Department is conducting a preliminary investigation into the incident.
