Kythera, 1909: The murderous rampage of a shoemaker who left 15 dead

After being unjustly hunted on the island, he returned years later to seek revenge on his fellow villagers

Newsroom June 3 10:56

Known as the “crime of the century,” it remains Greece’s deadliest murder by a single person. A shoemaker from Kythera, unjustly driven from his island, returned to seek revenge, killing fifteen people in a murderous spree. This crime is featured in the book “100 Crimes in Greece,” adapted into a novel and TV series titled “17 Threads.” Antonis Lagonaris, the cobbler, faced hardships after a dispute with a client, leading to his exile from the village.

His return culminated in a tragic rampage on August 23, 1909, during a village baptism, where he indiscriminately attacked the crowd, resulting in fifteen deaths. The parish priest ended the carnage by shooting Lagonaris, who was later apprehended by the police. Lagonaris, dubbed the “executioner of Kythira,” faced imprisonment, with rumors suggesting drug influence in his actions.
