Coldplay: The Band that will Rock OAKA

The 'Beatles of the 21st century' are gearing up for a spectacular weekend on June 8 & 9, ready to rock its Greek audience - Its band members & what will be vibing in Athens

Newsroom June 5 01:12

Arguably the top band of the 21st century, Coldplay has kept the pop scene alive with hit after hit, showcasing incredible longevity. Their live performances redefine the concert experience, and we’re about to witness it firsthand in Athens at the Olympic Stadium. With thousands of LEDs lighting up the venue, it promises to be one of the most spectacular shows the country has ever seen.

When Chris Martin crossed paths with guitarist Johnny Buckland at University College London, little did he know it would change his life forever. Together, they formed Coldplay, initially known as Big Fat Noises before settling on their iconic name. Unlike their peers, Coldplay opted for a cleaner, more melodic sound, eschewing extremes and focusing on meaningful lyrics and ecological consciousness.

Their debut album “Parachutes” catapulted them to stardom with hits like “Shiver” and “Yellow,” setting the stage for their innovative approach to music and performance. From their eco-friendly concerts to their unique recording methods – like converting an oven into a studio – Coldplay continues to push boundaries and captivate audiences worldwide.

Always staying true to their values, Coldplay opts for the subway over flashy rides, blending in with the crowd to dodge the paparazzi. It’s no surprise to spot bassist Guy Berryman cruising around Amsterdam on his bike, where he resides and runs his clothing brand, Applied Art Forms.

Shared Values

Coldplay’s rulebook hasn’t changed since day one: inspired by icons like U2 and R.E.M., they’ve upheld a zero-tolerance policy on substance abuse and divvied up tour profits equally among members.

Their commitment to sustainability shines through in their tours, adopting eco-friendly lighting and donating a portion of the proceeds to forest conservation efforts. Their charity work earned them Rolling Stone’s Band of the Year in 2003 and a Grammy for “Clocks” the following year. Far from fizzling out, their third album, “X & Y,” showcased their versatility, blending electronic elements with their signature pop-rock sound.

But it was “Viva La Vida!” that truly set them apart, with producer Brian Eno infusing their music with electronic nuances. The album, featuring the iconic cover art inspired by Delacroix, signaled a stylistic shift and cemented their status as pop icons.

Marriage and Breakups

While the early 2000s saw frontman Chris Martin basking in marital bliss with Gwyneth Paltrow, their relationship hit rocky waters in the 2010s. Despite promoting eco-friendly living and vegetarianism together, rumors of Paltrow’s infidelity and Martin’s constant touring strained their marriage.

Martin channeled his struggles into music, crafting “Ghost Stories” as a reflection of his breakup with Paltrow. The album marked a transition from loneliness to a sense of community, emblematic of Coldplay’s enduring bond and resilience.

Amidst their leader’s personal struggles, the band opted for a cozy setup, recording their latest album at bassist Guy Berryman’s home instead of a sterile studio. Influenced by frontman Chris Martin’s deep dive into metaphysics and ancient literature, their music now channels the wisdom of Gnostics, Alchemists, and poets like Rumi.

After a period of soul-searching and creative collaborations, Coldplay made a triumphant return in 2019 with their album “Everyday Life.” In an era of environmental consciousness, they’re taking eco-friendly measures, from hosting carbon-neutral concerts to urging fans to ditch plastic bottles and opt for public transport.

Their latest album, “Music of the Spheres,” embodies their eco-friendly ethos, urging concert-goers to embrace sustainability by using refillable water bottles and minimizing waste. Expect a green concert experience, complete with electric bikes and a kinetic dance floor powered by dancers’ movements.
