Medicine by Drones: Expanding Delivery to More Islands

A pilot program for delivering medicines by drones highlighted the need to utilize new technologies for permanent island residents

Newsroom June 7 10:01

After the successful pilot program delivering medicines via drones to the Small Cyclades, the initiative is set to expand to more islands. This program has highlighted the potential of new technologies to improve healthcare access for permanent island residents.

The Ministry of Health is leveraging technology to enhance healthcare services for islanders. On very small islands, where pharmacies or medicine may be lacking, drones will deliver necessary medications. Similarly, biological materials can be transported for examinations when local facilities are unavailable.

“We can send medicine by drone. Drone deliveries are feasible, and we are already testing this in Naxos and the Small Cyclades,” the Prime Minister stated at the 5th Conference of ygeiamou.gr, during a discussion on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications in healthcare. He clarified that while AI is beneficial in many areas, it cannot replace medical, nursing, and other health personnel. As an example, he mentioned that air transport for patients cannot be done through AI alone; human intervention is essential for emergencies.
