Cinema: Historic “Aigli” reopens at Zappeion

Protothema.gr was there at the grand opening of the majestic Aigli Cinema, renovated but, reminiscent of its past

Newsroom June 18 10:40

It has graced moonlit nights and romantic confessions, hosting screenings that linger in memory within a space reminiscent of Athens’ most nostalgic moments. The legendary summer cinema Aigli, nestled in Zappeion, reopens to the public, beautifully renovated yet preserving the timeless charm that defines it.

In this verdant setting, gazing up at the illuminated palm trees and the National Garden nearby, the scent of blooming flowers and the sound of crickets create an enchanting atmosphere. It feels like stepping into a time capsule, reminding us why Athens and its nights are so magical.

The large, impressive screen now offers a rare summer cinema experience, enhanced by a state-of-the-art 4K laser projector and Dolby 7.1 sound system. The careful renovation preserved the emblematic facade, renewing it with respect while keeping the two original planters that flank the screen. Elegant sconces provide just the right amount of lighting, maintaining the cinema’s essential aesthetic.

Aigli Cinema’s sophisticated image remains vibrant, even in this modern iteration. The new design follows the cinema’s classic cypress color scheme, highlighting the old Art Deco character that harkens back to Athens’ Belle Époque era. The new ownership aims to secure a diverse program of screenings, from classic films to world premieres—starting with Giorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness.” Special thematic screenings will also be featured, in collaboration with the experienced Gounaris family.

Cinema: The most anticipated films coming to the big screen in 2026

On this reopening night, we enjoyed a screening of Jonathan Demme’s timeless film about Talking Heads and their historic “Speaking in Tongues” tour. The crisp, hi-fi acoustics tested the cinema’s sound system, which proved flawless—an uncommon treat for summer cinemas, where many first-run films often lose their auditory nuances. The blend of classic and modern aesthetics, reflected in Demme’s independent production and the cinema’s renewed ambiance, was seamless.

However, the main reason we are here is to have a good time. We relaxed in comfortable chairs with tables, enjoying tailor-made cocktails and gourmet snacks—from negronis to chip sticks, popcorn, and deep-dish pizza crafted by chefs Dimos Balopoulos and Giorgos Kirikos. The canteen was rebuilt from scratch to meet modern demands, adding a contemporary touch to this beloved venue.

As the curators assert, “Aigli is not just a cinema but a living organism deeply connected to the most memorable cinematic experiences of Athenians.” It’s an image from the future, rooted in the past, inviting us to create new memories while cherishing the old.
