PASOK Leadership Race: Nominations sealed, Central Committee decisions await on Sunday

Nikos Androulakis under intense pressure as elections loom - Haris Doukas' bold message and alliance with Manolis Christodoulakis - What moves will Pavlos Geroulanos make

Newsroom June 28 09:57

A countdown scene is forming in PASOK, in anticipation of tomorrow’s crucial meeting of the Central Committee, where Haris Doukas, Pavlos Geroulanos and possibly other party officials are expected to officially announce their candidacy for the leadership.

At the same time in Harilaou Trikoupi, Nikos Androulakis is looking for the formula of the confrontation, although it seems that he has already retreated from his original position and especially after the stormy meeting of the Political Council and the Parliamentary Group he is forced to adopt the proposal of Haris Doukas for leadership election in the fall. It was preceded by the proposal of Odysseus Konstantinopoulos for the “restart” of PASOK until the end of the year, through an open process for the election of a new leader by the members and friends of the party. The goal of those who stand against the current leadership and ask for conditions of “upheavals” is the government perspective of PASOK in the next national elections.

“We want to make PASOK again, the soul of the democratic faction, of great changes and values, which will govern the country. In other words, we want to be able to create the conditions so that the big democratic faction will be in the government next time, in the next national elections”, clarifies Haris Doukas, who has already outlined the timetable, asking Harilaou Trikoupis to start from the union planning for this year’s September 3rd, where all executives (and not only the current leadership) can present their plan for the “next day” to PASOK. Pavlos Geroulanos has also spoken openly about the electoral defeat of the European elections, stressing meaningfully that people must be able to support politics, Nadia Giannakopoulou has directly raised the issue of leadership and is preparing to submit a “platform” to the Central Committee, a position in the field Manolis Christodoulakis has already taken the internal party confrontation clearly by inviting Haris Doukas to lead the restart in PASOK.

“If we continue with this rate increase, we will become a government close to 2050. So I answered that I started with the late Fofi Gennimata, who honored me and I was, being a professor and secretary in the energy sector and of course, I continued with N Androulakis. He also honored me and I continued as Secretary. It was a cycle of survival for the area and PASOK. And now I think we have to go into a new cycle, which is the new cycle of transcendence”, Mr. Doukas characteristically stated yesterday, speaking on the main bulletin of ANT1 about the new effort required in the field, without delays and evasions. For the Mayor of Athens, PASOK can join forces again, as it did with its own candidacy for the Municipality of Athens last October. He points out that in any case, he will remain Mayor of Athens, completing his term and at the same time demanding major changes in the country and from the role of responsibility of the leadership of PASOK, if elected. Is he a political fratricide, since Nikos Androulakis proposed and supported him to be elected Mayor of Athens, as some executives accuse him of?

“Haris Doukas’ proposal is a strong PASOK, which will unite, open and win”, he repeats, leaving sharp points against the current leadership and adding that: “I was supported by Nikos Androulakis and I think I have also supported him because you talk about friendship… Friendship is not slavery. Friendship is not property. I don’t feel like I own anyone and I don’t want my friends to feel like I own them either. And friendship presupposes freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom of expression. So I’ve heard a lot, even about it being a moral issue. And I want to say that I have a moral obligation to say and do what I believe is good for the area and the country. We are not a company, we have responsibility. I face the responsibility, I bring it forward and I say what I believe and I am judged like everyone else.” Colleagues of Mr. Doukas support the opinion that the two roles, of the Mayor and the leader of PASOK, are complementary and may bring wider positive results, as long as they convince as many citizens as possible of the need to implement a specific “upheaval” plan ».

The question now is whether Mr. Androulakis will announce to the Central Committee his decision to immediately appeal to the polls. Reports indicate that he intends to talk about polls within the year, for clear solutions against the dyarchy, a condition he tried when he was first elected
