Borrell Highlights Effectiveness of EU’s Operation Shields as a Security Force

He visited the operation's headquarters in Larissa along with the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias

Newsroom July 6 06:41

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, emphasized the effectiveness of the European Union as a maritime security force during his visit to the headquarters of Operation Shields in Larissa. Accompanied by the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, Borrell commended the staff for their diligent work.

Operation Shields in the Red Sea

Borrell highlighted Operation Shields in the Red Sea as a prime example of the EU’s capacity to ensure maritime security. He noted the ongoing threat posed by the Houthis, who have been launching targeted attacks on merchant ships, jeopardizing international navigation, trade, and regional peace and security.

Impact on International Trade

Borrell discussed the broader implications of these attacks, mentioning that alternative shipping routes can add 10 to 14 days to travel times, leading to increased costs and higher prices, which contribute to inflation. He emphasized that the poorest populations bear the brunt of these increased costs.

EU’s Defensive Response

Since the operation began in February, Operation Shields has successfully escorted 170 commercial ships through the Red Sea. Borrell also noted that 19 Houthi drones and missiles have been destroyed as part of the operation. He stressed that Operation Shields is strictly defensive and does not involve any land operations against the Houthis.
