Weather: Northerly winds, heat & showers today – High fire risk in 15 areas

"Very strong" thermal stress in much of the country

Newsroom August 5 07:57

Local showers and isolated thunderstorms will occur at noon – afternoon in the mountains and possibly in the morning hours in areas of central Macedonia, eastern Thessaly and northern Evia, while in the remaining areas generally clear weather is expected. The temperature in the north and central areas will drop, in contrast to the East Aegean islands where the maximum temperature will reach 38-40 degrees Celsius locally. At the same time, winds are also returning, raising the level of fire danger in several areas.

High fire risk in 15 areas

Fire danger is high for more than 15 areas of the country for today (05/08) according to the Fire Department’s Fire Prediction Map.

More specifically, Attica, Central Greece, Peloponnese, Western Greece, Epirus, Epirus, Magnesia, Sporades, Pieria, Larissa, Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Kilkis, Thassos, Evros and Heraklion have a high fire risk (level 3).

“Very Strong” Heat Stress Across Much of the Country – At 40.2°C Yesterday’s Maximum Temperature

“Very Strong” was the heat stress for the population in much of the country at noon (15:00) on Sunday 04/08. Figure 1 shows the heat stress in the areas of 160 selected meteorological stations of the meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens network. As can be seen from the recordings of these stations, in 85 of them, the thermal stress was “Very Strong” while in 1 station it was “Extreme”. The total percentage of stations with “Very Strong” or “Extreme” thermal stress was about 54%.

Heat stress (stress) due to heat was calculated based on the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI, °C) which incorporates meteorological parameters such as humidity, wind speed and radiation, taking into account the physiology of the human body. The temperature calculated from the UTCI can be assigned to a heat stress scale category. For example, a UTCI temperature of 26 °C – 32 °C corresponds to ‘moderate’, 32 °C – 38 °C to ‘severe’, 38 °C – 46 °C to ‘very severe’, > 46 °C to ‘extreme’ heat stress, while the UTCI scale is extended to include cold stress.

The temperature range also extends to “heat stress” and “heat stress”.

As for the maximum temperature in the country, it reached 40.2 °C, a value recorded in Sparta. Figure 2 shows the distribution of the maximum temperature in the country. As can be seen from the relevant information presented in this figure, the temperature exceeded 37 °C at 61 of the 493 currently active stations and 40 °C at 2 stations.
