Fire in Attica: Battle to save animals from the fiery front – Dramatic appeals on social media

Animal shelters on standby - "Don't abandon your pets"

Newsroom August 12 07:56

Residents of northeastern Attica are living hours of agony as the fire that broke out at noon on Sunday (11/8) in Varnavas has reached uncontrollable proportions.

Animal shelters are also on standby. A coordination center for animals at risk in the greater Varnavas area of Attica, Attica, affected by the fires, has been set up at the Ministry of Interior by the Special Secretariat for Companion Animals. Citizens, the ministry said, can be contacted at 213 1361085 and 213 1361033. Also, in Marathon Municipality and Dionysos Municipality, animal reception areas for animals in distress operated throughout the night at the Grammatikou Town Hall, the Grammatikou Basketball Court, and the Anoixis football field.

During a live link from Nea Penteli, Star reporter Aris Lambos saw a white dog visibly distressed and frightened, which in some places had been burned by the fire, and rushed to take it in his arms and carry it to safety. The dog, who was on a leash, had apparently gotten lost in the panic to evacuate the area, and was wandering around alone and helpless in the thick smoke.
