Nikos Pappas: New Audio Clip Sparks Controversy as SYRIZA MEP Issues Threats

Government Seeks Answers from SYRIZA Regarding Former Basketball Player's Conduct - Case Background

Newsroom August 20 06:12

In the recently surfaced recording, Nikos Pappas is heard making threatening remarks, stating: “Please be cautious about what you say, how you say it, and to whom as you are under my watch. Pay attention. You illiterate person, social outcast. In any case, you are not particularly well-regarded either. So, please disappear before things escalate further (audio cuts off).”

Context of the Situation

The controversy began on Saturday when Nikos Pappas reportedly made disparaging comments and threats towards two police officers on social media, using terms such as “cops.”

Following the release of initial recordings, the situation intensified, leading to condemnation from the Hellenic Police Officers Association and Police Employees Union, both of which called for Pappas’s removal from office.

In response, the government took swift action. New Democracy initially requested Pappas’s expulsion, and government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis subsequently urged SYRIZA leader Stefanos Kasselakis to take appropriate measures.

Nikos Pappas addressed the matter with a statement on Instagram, asserting his respect for law enforcement while expressing his intolerance for personal insults against him or his family. He also criticized the government for its prompt response to his case compared to its handling of other issues such as wildfires.

SYRIZA officials sought to minimize the incident by suggesting that only one police officer was affected, citing an individual who claimed affiliation with New Democracy. However, it was later clarified that this person had been expelled from the party and had left the police force, as confirmed by the Hellenic Police. The former police officer has since stated that he was not involved in the incidents related to Pappas.
