Weather: Volatility is reduced, temperature rises – New wave of bad weather next week

Wednesday was the coolest day of the last 46 days - The forecast for the weekend

Limited instability in the continental areas in the coming days and a slight rise in temperature is expected, according to the director of the National Meteorological Service (EMF), Thodoris Kolydas. The winds will blow north – northwest 4 to 6 Beaufort and occasionally Friday-Saturday locally in the Aegean Sea at 6 to 7.

As Mr. Kolydas stresses in his statement, “the temperature in our country is maintained at levels above normal by 4°C, while the deviations and average maximum values will be much greater in the Northern Balkans and Eastern Europe in general.”

However, a new wave of bad weather is expected to hit the country next week, coming from Italy. According to ERT meteorologist Panagiotis Giannopoulos, this bad weather will mainly affect western and northern Greece, while thousands of thunderstorms have already occurred since yesterday afternoon, mainly in Central Greece, Thessaly and Central Macedonia, where large volumes of water were recorded.

Yesterday was the coolest day in the last 46 days – At 36.3°C the maximum temperature

A drop in temperature was recorded by the network of automatic meteorological stations of meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens on Wednesday 21/08. As shown in the map in the image below, the maximum temperature on Wednesday 21/08 was recorded in Sparta and was equal to 36.3 °C.

In addition, the average maximum temperature in the country was equal to 30.2 °C, while only 4 of the 496 active stations (at the present time) recorded temperatures above 35 °C, thus recording the coolest day in the last 46 days (since 4-5 July 2024).

Weather today:

A few clouds are expected across the country. During the warmer hours of the day, clouds will increase on the mainland and rain or thunderstorms will occur, mainly in mountainous areas. The phenomena will be more intense in the western mountains, as well as in the Peloponnese, where lowland areas will be affected.

The temperature will range in Western Macedonia from 15 to 32 degrees, in the rest of northern Greece from 18 to 36-38 degrees, in Thessaly from 18 to 35-37 degrees, in Epirus from 19 to 34-36 degrees, in the rest of the continental parts from 20 to 35-37 degrees, in the Ionian Islands from 22 to 33-35 degrees Celsius, in the Aegean islands and in Crete from 22 to 33-34 degrees Celsius, while in the East Aegean islands and in South Crete the maximum temperatures will reach 36-37 degrees Celsius locally.

In the Aegean Sea the wind will blow northwest winds with intensities of 4-5 Beaufort and locally 6 Beaufort. Winds from northwestern directions with intensities of 3-4 Beaufort will blow in the Ionian Sea.


FORECAST FOR FRIDAY 23-08-2024
Generally clear weather, with occasional clouds in the midday and afternoon hours in the central and northern mainland, mainly in the mountains, where there will be local rain or rain.

Winds will blow north-northwest, in the west and north 3 to 5 Beaufort, in the east and south 5 to 6 Beaufort and occasionally in the Aegean Sea locally 7 Beaufort.
The temperature will rise slightly. It will reach 36 to 38 degrees Celsius on the mainland.

In the islands it will reach 31 to 33 degrees Celsius and locally in the Ionian Islands, the eastern Aegean and southern Crete 34 to 35 degrees Celsius.

FORECAST FOR SUNDAY 25-08-2024
Generally clear weather. In the midday and afternoon hours in the central and southern continental areas there will be some clouds and mainly in the mountains there will be local rain or rain.
Winds will blow north-northwest 3 to 5 and in the Aegean Sea 5 to 6 Beaufort.
The temperature will not change significantly.
