Halkidiki: We were told she had drunk some water, says father of 8-year-old girl who drowned in camp pool

"The preliminary evidence shows serious and criminal omissions by the camp staff" said the family's lawyer

Newsroom August 28 05:58

The father of 8-year-old Angeliki who lost her life on Tuesday (13/8) in a camp in the area of Kriopigi, Halkidiki, is shocked.

Christos Kazazis, speaking to Mega, referred to the tragic moments he and the rest of the family experienced when he received a phone call concerning his 8-year-old daughter.

“We received a call from the camp at about 16.01 and we were surprised as we knew that this was lunch time for the children. We pick up and they ask, ‘Are you Angeliki’s mother? When we answered in the affirmative we were told that “Angeliki had drank some water”. Then another person spoke to us, paused and then added that the child was not conscious,”
Angeliki’s father said.

As the parents prepared to set off for the camp, they received a new call from the officials who asked them not to start as the child was being taken to AHEPA: “On the way to the camp, we were told ‘don’t start. The child has been intubated and is leaving for AHEPA’. We started we went to AHEPA and waited for him to come.” Kazazazis added.

“From the initial evidence, serious and criminal omissions by the people of the camp are emerging,” said the lawyer of the 8-year-old girl’s family.

The camp’s operating license has been revoked

It is noted that the revocation of the permission to operate the camp in Halkidiki where the 8-year-old girl drowned was made on Monday (19/8) by the competent region.

It is recalled that last week, the Municipality of Kassandra revoked the operating licenses of the swimming pools of the camp, where the 8-year-old girl was found dead, after a unanimous decision of the municipal committee. Specifically, during the meeting it was reported that an on-site inspection at the camp revealed that in one of the pools, part of the fencing was not as intended in a designated and safe area for children, leaving points from which access to the swimming pool was possible. As for the second pool, the inspection revealed that the necessary life jackets and poles were not provided and there were no depth markings.

In addition, it was found that the person appointed as the person responsible for ensuring that the operation of the two swimming pools complied with the relevant health and tourism regulations had not been hired by the owner for the year 2024 and no other person had been appointed.

According to the 2016 ministerial decision, which sets out the criteria for the operation of campsites, the swimming pool must be located in a secure and properly fenced area with a fixed fence 1.20 meters high to ensure its use under the supervision of the required personnel, such as lifeguards.
