Today marks the somber anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games attack.

A major police operation has been launched in Munich after shots were fired in the city center.

According to Bild, an unknown man armed with a long-barreled weapon approached police officers stationed outside the Munich Documentation Center—the former Nazi Party headquarters, now dedicated to addressing the city’s troubled past—and opened fire on them.

Authorities deployed a helicopter and urged citizens to avoid the area where the shooting took place.

The shooting occurred on a particularly sensitive date—the anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games attack. During that tragic event, Palestinian terrorists took 11 Israeli athletes hostage and ultimately killed them, marking one of the darkest moments in Olympic history.
