Van Gogh painting to be auctioned – Estimated to sell for up to $50 million

The painting Les canots amarrés (Moored Boats) by renowned artist Vincent van Gogh is expected to sell for a record-breaking price when it goes up for auction for the first time in 30 years. The auction will be held by Christie's Hong Kong on September 26

Newsroom September 12 02:46

Created in 1887, the painting is estimated to fetch between $30 and $50 million. If it sells for the upper estimate of $50 million, it will become the most expensive work by a Western artist ever sold at auction in Asia, surpassing the current record-holder, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Warrior (1982), which sold for $41.7 million at Christie’s in 2021.

This work is part of a trio of landscapes that Van Gogh painted in Asnières-sur-Seine during his travels in France. The picturesque village, located along the Seine River northwest of Paris, was a popular weekend retreat for sailors.

According to the auction house, the painting originally belonged to the Bourbon-Two Sicilies royal family, descendants of the historical rulers of Sicily and southern Italy.

In 1991, it was purchased by Italian actress Edy Vessel from Sotheby’s in London. The painting is now being offered by Christie’s on behalf of Vessel’s daughter, Princess Camilla, who inherited it through a family trust.
