Unit 8200: Elite Israeli 20 year-olds linked to Hezbollah device explosions

A Western security source told Reuters that Unit 8200, which is not part of Mossad, participated in the development stage of the operation against Hezbollah

Newsroom September 18 09:09

While Israel has yet to comment on the operation that caused simultaneous explosions of thousands of Hezbollah communication devices, the attack brought the secretive cyberwarfare Unit 8200 to the forefront. According to a Western security source, the unit was involved in planning the operation.

A senior Lebanese security official and another source cited by Reuters indicated that Mossad was responsible for inserting small amounts of explosives into 5,000 communication devices ordered by Hezbollah. Meanwhile, the Western security source stated that Unit 8200, a military unit independent of Mossad, played a role in the technical side of the operation, focusing on how explosives could be introduced into the manufacturing process.

Yossi Kuperwasser, a former Israeli military intelligence official, noted that while there is no confirmation of Unit 8200’s involvement, its members are some of Israel’s best military personnel, working to enhance the country’s defense capabilities.

The Identity of Unit 8200

According to Reuters, Unit 8200 is part of Israel’s Military Intelligence Directorate and is comparable to the U.S. National Security Agency or the UK’s GCHQ. It is the largest single military unit in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

  • Its activities are highly classified and range from intercepting encrypted information to technological attacks.
  • Its members, selected from highly competitive high school programs, are mostly in their early twenties. Many go on to successful careers in Israel’s high-tech and cybersecurity industries.

Notable Operations

Some reported operations attributed to Unit 8200 include:

  • The creation and dissemination of the Stuxnet virus, which disabled a significant portion of Iran’s nuclear program between 2005-2010.
  • A 2017 cyberattack on Lebanon’s state telecommunications company Ogero.
  • Preventing an ISIS attack on a civilian plane traveling from Australia to the UAE in 2018.

Former members describe Unit 8200’s culture as similar to that of a startup, with small teams working independently on specific problems, fostering creativity. However, like the rest of Israel’s defense and security system, the unit’s reputation was damaged by its failure to prevent the October 7 attacks.

Lebanon: At Least 14 Dead from Hezbollah Device Explosions

Simultaneously, explosions involving Hezbollah communication devices have caused 14 deaths and injured 450 people in Lebanon, according to the country’s health ministry. This follows another wave of explosions that killed at least 12 and injured nearly 2,800 people, as confirmed by Lebanese authorities.
