Pharmaceuticals in shortage being exported by wholesalers – New complaints from pharmacists

The pharmacists' association claims that wholesalers are not fulfilling their commitments to export only surplus quantities, according to the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association (PFS)

Newsroom September 23 05:30

The “war” between pharmacists and wholesalers over the ongoing medication shortages in the Greek market seems unending. The PFS has shared a letter from a private wholesaler to cooperative wholesalers, accompanied by a list of products intended for export.

According to pharmacists, these products are in short supply and are in high demand from foreign wholesalers. “In this letter from the private wholesaler, which effectively operates as an export company, it states that it is requesting large quantities of medications, particularly those that are in short supply but can be exported, for which the wholesalers who gather and send them will reportedly achieve high profitability and increased liquidity,” notes the PFS, highlighting the following:

  1. 80% of the medications on the list are in short supply or have limited availability.
  2. The majority of exportable medications show profitability, as evidenced by the list, ranging from 35% to 200%.
  3. For the first time, vaccines ( !! ) are being exported, many of which are in short supply, such as Bexsero.

This demonstrates that the reliability of certain private wholesalers to uphold their commitments to the Ministry of Health regarding exports of only surplus medication, after ensuring the treatment of Greek patients, is nonexistent.
