George Baldock: Heartbreak for his partner and family – “We were waiting for you to celebrate your son’s birthday with us”

"My world will never be the same, but I'll make it work for Brody. I promise," wrote Annabelle Dinaum.

Newsroom October 11 10:43

Heartbreaking is the first message from the partner of George Baldock, the Panathinaikos and Greek national team footballer who was found dead Wednesday night in his home swimming pool.

In a post on Instagram, Annabelle Dinaum wrote about Baldock, with whom she had a one-year-old child.

“George, love of my life, my soul mate. The perfect father of a beautiful boy. With you I was complete. You were my world and I know I was yours. You are with me now that Brody is smiling. My world will never be the same, but I’ll make it for Brody. I promise. I’ll love you forever and ever G. Your Neen. X,” she wrote, according to the Daily Mail in her post

At the same time, the family of the footballer noted in a new statement that they were expecting George Baldock on Wednesday to celebrate his son’s first birthday together.

“You were supposed to fly home today to celebrate your son’s first birthday with us, but instead we mourn your loss,” reads the new statement from George Baldock’s family.

Drowning the cause of death

According to reports, an autopsy performed on the body of the 31-year-old revealed that the young man’s death was indeed due to”drowning in water.”

The autopsy was completed at noon Thursday at the Athens University Forensic Department, while samples were taken for toxicology tests.

From the beginning, the forensic expert’s assessment was that the young athlete’s death was due to drowning as, as explained to protothema.gr well-informed sources, macroscopically foamy microbubbles had been found. In other words, he had swallowed water while alive.

His body had no marks, wounds or bruises indicating any criminal activity.

The footballer was reportedly in his home’s pool for at least five hours before he was finally spotted by the property manager. His wife who was in England with their daughter was looking for him and had to contact the landlord of the house Baldock was renting so that he could go to see what was going on.

The man went to the property only to find the 31-year-old footballer dead in his swimming pool. His death was immediately confirmed by ambulance rescuers, who rushed to the scene shortly after being alerted but could do nothing to revive him.

The footballer’s body did not bear any injuries or marks indicating a criminal act. When the ambulance arrived, the footballer had already been pulled from the pool by police officers on the scene. He was wearing his swimsuit, which indicates that he was probably swimming when the fatal event occurred.

Panathinaikos technical director Giannis Papadimitriou arrived immediately at the scene, as well as Giorgos Tzavellas, the club’s director of football and a former teammate of his in the Greek national team. A number of teammates and club officials, including Zeka, Schenkfeld, Magnuson, Villena and Pereth, were outside the house, trying to come to terms with the tragic event.
