Beleris: Albania’s place is in the EU – The conditions for the protection of the Greek minority

Clear conditions have been set that the Greek-Albanian disputes and the protection of the Greek minority is EU policy, said Mr.Beleris

Newsroom October 18 09:02

Speaking on Albania and the start of EU accession negotiations, Member of the European Parliament Fredis Beleris spoke, among others, on SKAI and the Today Show.

“Albania’s position is in the EU; For the first time now, October 15, clear conditions have been set and now from a bilateral issue that the Greek-Albanian differences and the protection of the Greek minority are an EU policy,” he said.

As he said, the text talks about a timetable regarding the property issue, when the property will be returned and by what procedure, and “another issue that had to do with the self-identification of the members of the Greek minority, there the text clearly says that within the year three implementing laws should be passed that have to do with self-identification and the use of language in the communications of citizens with the state and public services. I believe it is a serious step.”

Asked whether Edi Rama will abide by them, he commented that there are many in Albania who question whether he really wants to, while regarding Turkish investments, he said that “the opposition and analysts say that there are no Turkish investments but black Albanian money that go for a ride in Türkiye come back.  Türkiye is in a bad mess.”

On whether Albania is a rule of law to join Europe, Beleris said “Of course it is not. Now the question that comes up is whether we want an Albania on the verge and under our control or an Albania out of control. I believe this prevailed in the end and the Greek government was right to advocate it.”

The only solution for Albania is in Europe, Beleris added, noting that “there is no comparison between inside and outside Europe.”

On the Meloni–Rama deal, he said it is a firework and will not work at all.
