Sheep pox: Nationwide ten-day closure of abattoirs

In light of recent data, 104 outbreaks of sheep pox were addressed, leading to the culling of 17,500 animals in Evros, Komotini, Xanthi, Kavala, Serres, Magnesia, and Corinth

Newsroom October 22 07:43

A ban on the movement of animals across Greece for any purpose—such as slaughter or fattening—has been implemented for ten days following a video conference led by the Minister of Rural Development and Food with Deputy Minister Christos Kellas, General Secretary for Rural Development and Food George Stratakos, regional governors, deputy regional governors responsible for the primary sector, representatives from ETHEAS and the Interprofessional Organizations of Meat and Feta, the SEVGAP Federation of Industrial Abattoirs, and the Veterinary Directorate.

This measure entails a nationwide closure of abattoirs, not just in affected areas.

As emphasized in a statement, the upgrading of security measures is deemed necessary for the entire country after cases of sheep pox were identified in Magnesia and Corinth. This is a precautionary step aimed at limiting the spread and eradicating the disease following its expansion into these regions.

Meanwhile, the services of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, in collaboration with the regions, continue their epidemiological investigation regarding the origins of the outbreaks.
