Fredi Beleris: Albania cannot join the EU if the rights of its minorities are not respected

Fredi Beleris and Edi Rama are expected to have their first meeting after the former's release from prison, as part of a European Parliament delegation to Tirana

Newsroom October 29 07:47

Messages to Edi Rama were sent by Fredi Beleris, ahead of their first meeting since his release from prison.

“Mr. Rama is sovereign in his country but there is another country more powerful which is Greece which, with the Greek prime minister’s move to nominate me as a candidate and with the trust of the people, has shown that no one can play with Hellenism,” Beleris told OPEN.

Fredi Beleris and Edi Rama are expected to have their first meeting since the former’s release from prison, as part of a European Parliament delegation mission to Tirana to check on the accession path of Albania to the European Union.

“I never expected that I, representing the European Parliament, and he, representing the Albanian state, would meet,” he commented.

Regarding the indigenous ethnic Greek minority of northern Epirus, in the south of Albania, he made it clear that “I have decided to claim everything that the Greek minority is deprived of and that is the property, as well as the right of self-determination. Basic rights that if they are not respected I believe that Albania cannot become a member of the European Union.”

Fredi Beleris confirmed that Edi Rama is pushing Albania towards Turkey, against the will of Albanian citizens: “Turkey’s interference in Albania is clearly visible on a daily basis. It is inexplicable because the people do not believe they want a relationship with Erdogan. They wants to join the EU. Already half of Albanian citizens live in EU countries. It is an inexplicable choice of Mr. Rama.”
