USA: The mother who fell with her two children into Niagara Falls was suffering from postpartum depression

She did not commit suicide because of a man or a breakup but because she was suffering from postpartum depression, her cousin said - rescuers could not locate their bodies

Newsroom November 3 07:57

A 33-year-old woman threw her two children into Niagara Falls in the U.S. and then took a death plunge herself, according to the New York Post.

As her cousin tells the American medium, “Chiandi Means did not kill herself over a man or a breakup, as many internet users speculate, but ended her life by leading her children to their deaths because she was suffering from postpartum depression.”

“Understand this – postpartum is real and needs treatment,” said Beera Hamilton. “My cousin’s death was not about a man. My cousin was silently struggling with her depression,” she told NYPost.

Her Facebook posts indicated that Mines, 33, and the infant’s father ended their relationship in late August.

Minnes and her children, newborn Mecca and 9-year-old Roman, were residents of Niagara.

Rescuers have been unable to locate their bodies.

The mother worked as a domestic violence counselor, according to her LinkedIn profile, and graduated from school in nearby Buffalo.

“My cousin had a beautiful soul,” Hamilton added. “She loved her children and her family very much. She and her children will be greatly missed.”

Minnes is believed to have jumped from Luna Island, one of several popular attractions located above the New York side of Niagara Falls.

It is one of the most secluded spots in the sprawling Niagara Falls State Park, separated from the rest of the grounds by a bridge over a river channel, with a chest-high railing separating the platform from the deadly fall.

The site is managed by the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and is open to visitors 24 hours seven days a week.

More than 8 million people pass through the park each year, according to the state agency.

In 2023, another mother jumped with her son into Niagara Gorge, just below the falls.
