Mitsotakis: Greek-American relations are strategic and will not be affected by the outcome of the US elections

On the occasion of the submission of two bills for consultation, the Prime Minister reiterated that on the one hand, the tax reduction will proceed mainly for the middle class and on the other hand, the minimum wage will reach 950 euros in 2027

Newsroom November 5 11:34

Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent the message that “regardless of the US election result, Greek-American relations are strategic and will not be affected in terms of content” in his meeting with the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

“Again, regardless of the outcome, the geopolitical coming of age of Europe becomes necessary. And on the occasion of Draghi’s report, the time has come for Europe to reassess how it can make up for lost ground from the US and China by launching policies that should go off the beaten track,” the Prime Minister added.

He noted that “the intense polarisation and toxicity we see in the US is a problem in its own right for our democracies. In a democracy, we may be adversaries but never enemies. Democracy provides for respect for each other’s opinions and the confrontation of plans and views, but because Greece has paid the price for the toxicity of public debate, we must bear in mind that democracy is strengthened without toxicity and unnecessary counter-arguments.”

Mitsotakis also informed President Sakellaropoulou about the submission for consultation of two bills concerning the new tax bill and the new way of calculating the minimum wage from 2028.

On the new tax bill, Mitsotakis noted that “it includes significant tax cuts for 2025. We are geared towards cutting taxes as the economy grows and we are fighting the scourge of tax evasion and I say this because in many European countries governments are following the opposite path. From now on the focus is on the middle class in terms of tax cuts.”

Finally, referring to the bill on the new way of calculating the minimum wage from 2028, he noted that it will contain an explicit commitment that minimum wages will not be reduced to add that “we remain committed to a 950 euro increase in the minimum wage by 2027.”
