A large part of the South Terminal at Gatwick Airport was evacuated on Friday morning due to a “security incident.”

The airport reports that an investigation is ongoing and that the incident is “still unfolding,” while Sussex Police sent an explosives disposal team “as a precautionary measure.”

In a post on X, the airport stated: “The safety of our passengers and staff remains our top priority. We are working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”

A large part of the South Terminal has been evacuated as a precaution while we continue to investigate a security incident.

Passengers will not be able to enter the South Terminal while this is ongoing.

“I arrived at Gatwick for a routine flight. I went through customs and discovered that they are evacuating the entire airport,” one passenger said. “Even people who had already passed through security are being directed outside. Trains are shut down, and 1,000 people are waiting in the streets and parking lots.”

Another passenger mentioned that those near the gates were told to stay there and not return to the departures hall.

Gatwick Express, the train company serving airport passengers, also issued a statement on the matter, saying that its trains would not approach the facility “until further notice.”

“This is due to police and emergency services dealing with an incident at the airport. At present, the station and the airport are being evacuated. We advise you to delay your journey until later this morning,” the statement read.
