Vefa Alexiadou funeral: Family and friends bid farewell

The funeral takes place at the Thermi Cemetery in Thessaloniki, following the passing of Vefa Alexiadou at 91, after health challenges

Newsroom November 27 12:35

Vefa Alexiadou passed away on Monday at the age of 91 after a period of hospitalization at Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki. She had been facing several health issues.

Her death brought sorrow to those who knew, loved, and admired her for her contributions to Greek cuisine and her lively presence on television. Her cookbooks brought Greek flavors into countless homes, shaping generations.

The funeral service is being held at the Church of the Resurrection in Thermi, Thessaloniki, followed by her burial at the Thessaloniki Municipal Cemetery.

A Life Remembered:

Vefa Alexiadou was born in Volos in 1933 and became a leading figure in Greek gastronomy and a multifaceted personality. Coming from a family with a rich history, she studied Chemistry at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and worked as a chemist before dedicating herself to cooking and publishing.

Her culinary writing career began in 1980, with successful cookbooks that elevated Greek cuisine internationally. She became a household name in 1990 through her television appearances.

Her efforts to promote Greek gastronomy extended to her involvement with organizations like I.A.C.P. and Archestratos. She temporarily lived in the U.S. twice, mastering modern cooking and decoration methods. In 1993, she founded “Vefa’s House,” a business with 26 kitchenware stores.

Despite her professional success, her life was marked by profound personal losses, including the passing of her husband Kostas Alexiadis, her two daughters, and her sister within a few years.

A Moving Tribute from Friends:

One of her close friends, Dionysis, expressed his grief, recalling their decades-long friendship and her warm personality.

“I met her 40 years ago, and we became close friends. She was a kind and beloved person, respected by everyone. For me, she was like family,” he said, adding that her advice extended beyond cooking, offering him comfort and inspiration.

Her absence was deeply felt by those who admired her for her culinary expertise and her generous spirit.

Criticism Over Absences:

According to a report from Super Katerina, no well-known TV personalities or public figures attended her funeral. Panagiotis Psomiadis, one of the few who paid their respects, called it a shame that many who owed their careers to her were absent.

“It’s heartbreaking that such a pioneering figure passed away with so little recognition from the people she helped. This should make us all reflect,” he remarked.

Honoring Her Legacy:

The family requested donations to “The Smile of the Child” instead of wreaths, reflecting Vefa Alexiadou’s generous spirit.

Her legacy as a culinary icon and a pioneer of Greek gastronomy will remain unparalleled. Vefa Alexiadou wasn’t just a chef; she was a cultural ambassador whose influence crossed borders.
