Tahiaos: Thessaloniki Metro is one of the safest in the world

The Thessaloniki Metro shares the same features as the Copenhagen Metro, emphasized the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport

Newsroom November 28 12:25

“The Thessaloniki Metro is one of the safest in the world,” stated Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Tachiaos today.

“We have a metro system with two tunnels and incredible safety systems. The probability of a fatal error in this metro is between once every 11,500 years and once every 115,000 years. Essentially, it’s zero because this exceeds the project’s lifespan,” he said on MEGA.

“The platform experience is very different from what we are used to, at least in Athens. It’s like stepping into a closed lounge—clean, modern, and welcoming.”

“The Thessaloniki Metro has the same characteristics as the Copenhagen Metro,” the Deputy Minister added.

“For security reasons, there are no trash bins. There should be no blind spots in metro systems, as they are vulnerable spaces,” he noted.

“We need to monitor how passenger traffic evolves. It’s a different daily routine for Thessaloniki residents, and they’ll need time to adjust. Passenger demand will determine train frequency,” he added.

According to the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, the launch of the Thessaloniki Metro is expected to remove approximately 70,000 cars from circulation.

“Thessaloniki is entering the ‘wow’ era with this metro. It’s a game-changer for the city,” concluded Mr. Tachiaos.
